The vision for REVAMP THE VALLEY is to create a town that respects Fish Hoek valley's
history, generates income, brings in visitors, and becomes an exciting hub for the
whole family.

Fish Hoek is the only commercial town south of Silvermine serving the Valley region, and
has enormous potential to grow, without the negative impact of gentrification. We are
starting the revamp by making Fish Hoek aesthetically attractive, creating an identity that
reflects the uniqueness of the Valley, and which is an inclusive representation of the
diverse community from the beach of False Bay, to the white sands of Noordhoek.

PROJECTS

Every project will require community input - whether in the form of opinions freely
expressed, or voting for a winning idea. Residents, business and property owners,
elected representatives, and other organisations, are all welcome and their voices
will be heard with respect.

Each project requires a Project Leader who is the point-of-contact for that project, and will be
the major liaison between those involved, and the rest of the community. The Project
Leader's main goal is to oversee the work being done, and ensuring everything is
undertaken within the values of the Revamp initiative.

Project leaders can then run their project with the cooperation and collaboration of anyone in the greater Valley community who is interested in getting involved.

GENTRIFICATION

The town of Fish Hoek has great bones. There will be no invitation to outside developers wanting to turn Fish Hoek into some trendy, upmarket destination. We, the residents of this area, will preserve the spirit of the town, while creating a safe and beautiful environment. RTV respects the history of the area, and will make every effort to preserve and promote that history.

UNIQUE FISH HOEK

Creating an identity unique to the town is imperative. What do we want Fish Hoek to look like?
Between absentee landlords and property managers not being held accountable, the buildings on Main Road are in varying states of disrepair.

A long-term Aesthetics Project will include emphasizing the lovely Art Deco buildings, and transforming the "plain" buildings by adding sophisticated artworks. Large street sculptures will be welcomed, with residents and visitors alike spending time walking around what is effectively a massive, constantly changing and evolving 3-dimensional art gallery.

The art can encompass all forms: 3-dimensional street painting, sophisticated murals, a "graffiti wall", a 'Kidzone' where different local schools are represented, sculptures of varying sizes, etc. Recycled materials will always be encouraged, and ongoing competitions will be held where residents can vote for their favourite idea and the winning artist will be supplied with materials in order to turn their concept into reality.

An ever-changing landscape where some art is permanent, and some is temporary, will keep bringing visitors in to see what's new in Fish Hoek.

Some useful links from around the world, describing the value of including street art:
"Not only do street art and graffiti murals improve the general look of a space but the study suggests that it also has the ability to improve the area from a financial aspect which then goes on to benefit the community by creating more jobs within the area, which is especially beneficial for areas were employment opportunities are low." - The Value of Street Art, by blackbookink

University of the Sunshine Coast researcher Dr Megan Marks adds, public art could make property hunters who enjoy art and culture “perceive” that a location is a more attractive place to buy and live. And if buyers with the means want a property because it is located near a desired artwork, then they will probably pay a premium for it.

“Public art also can share what that community appreciates, whether it be the environment or local heroes,” says Dr Marks. “This pride in place leads people to look after their neighbourhood and their area, which means a more attractive property location for property sellers and buyers.”
