PLANT-A-TREE DAY

Revamp's Greening Initiative

HE WHO PLANTS A TREE PLANTS A HOPE – Lucy Larcom

The Plant-A-Tree day on May 27 was fantastic - 14 trees were planted by local community and family members. Sadly, a couple have been stolen, but we will not be deterred! Please help take care of them, and be the watchful eye to prevent anyone ruining the work.

We will be doing this monthly, and are planning a social event for the whole family in our efforts to create the Steenbok Way space into a magical place for everyone.

Stay tuned for more info!

SOME FAQ's:

-          Where?
Open Space (Public Land, cannot be sold) Between 1st and 2nd Crescent Fish Hoek.

-          Where do I buy a tree?
Trees can be bought at any nursery, including Harry Goemans and Valyland. Discounts are up to the nursery.

-          I am unable to dig a hole, is there assistance?
Jenni, the Project Leader, will assist anyone who can’t dig but is willing to donate a tree. She will be there to pinpoint good spots for planting.

-          Are there tools available?
People have to bring their own tools, and there will be some that can be shared.

-          Who is going to water them every day?
Indigenous trees don’t need watering every day. Trees can be buried with a bottle or pipe with a hole which can be filled with grey water or borehole water. They do survive without as well. Especially coastal silver oak tree. It just helps them grow faster.  Anyone participating needs to take responsibility to see their tree grow so if they attend to their tree once a week with grey water then the tree should survive. Community needs to take responsibility. Jenni lives close by and will oversee the trees. Out of every 3 trees planted on will most likely survive.

-          What is the space? Is it zoned as a park? Or will someone buy it in the future and chop down all the trees?
Open Space (Public Land, cannot be sold). Milkwood trees are protected so anyone chopping trees down will have legal implications. If this ever changes, Jenni has undertaken to move the trees to another safe place.
-          What trees were donated, and where is the money going? Is there a plan to put in park benches or a playground?
Fundraising efforts will be introduced soon to start adding park and/or playground equipment. This is always a community effort. Residents need to make it their own initiative.

The development of the Kidzone will be a longer term Revamp project, and we are currently looking for a Project Leader to manage that. Please get in touch if you'd like to become involved!

for the kids:

Make a large Rube Goldberg contraption for the open space at Steenbok Way from recycled materials.

This needs to be too heavy to move, but usable for anyone visiting the park who wants to play with it.
