ABOUT: Creating safe spaces for kids to play outside, and for families and residents to socialize

TASK:

For Steenbok way: bench repair is needed;

Collect old tyres and other materials

Find storage space

Send word to any artisan who can create furniture or playground equipment from tyres or other material
Discuss skateboard park and other social places

Encourage residents to use the space as much as possible

Engage Neighbourhood Watch to avoid theft

ISSUE: Parks build healthy and safe communities

ABOUT: Creating welcoming open spaces for the whole family

 

TASK:

Buy a plant, preferably indigenous;

Plant in marked space on "Planting days" (once a month);

Water plants with grey water;

If necessary, create a roster for people to care for plants;

Encourage social use of open space with family picnics;

Keep space clean of litter and dog waste

Engage Neighbourhood Watch to avoid theft

MAN UP

PROJECT LEADER: (open)

ISSUE: Street sexual harassment and abuse of women

ABOUT: To engage men to volunteer in public areas, wearing T-shirts or sash, and providing man-to-man peer pressure to stop street sexual harassment.

This is not a service to protect women but rather to send the message to men that this is unacceptable behavior.

TASK:

Create slogans for T-shirts, sashes, cards

Work with local printers to print T-shirts, sashes and cards, and with police and security company to support effort.

Request men volunteer some time to wear branded T-shirt or sash and be vigilant to street harassment, creating man-to-man peer pressure to raise awareness and prevention

FUNDING: Printing; T-shirts

TASK:

Identify small plots (various Project Leaders in different communities)

Hospital garden: Small committee to work on overall proposal and design. Invite UCT Engineers or others to design waste water recycling feature that can be incorporated into the land and potentially become an educational spot or tourism point of interest.

FOOD GARDENS:

PROJECT LEADERS: (open)

ISSUE: 80% of SA households are food insecure; poor nutrition has an impact on everyone

Small gardens: guerilla gardens – finding smaller spots where food can be grown

Large garden: the False Bay Hospital board wants a formal proposal, with funding mechanism included, before granting approval.

D-DAY – COMBATTING HOMELESSNESS

PROJECT LEADER: (open)

ISSUE: Homeless people across the Valley with no available options to get off the street.

ABOUT: Providing practical and long-term assistance to the large number of homeless people in the Valley.

The "Dignity Day" project (project name to be determined) will offer a regular (weekly or monthly) shower, barber, grooming, or hairdressing service, laundered clothing plus new clothing, skills training, meal, and a medical and dental check-up by health professionals.

TASK:

Find venue with shower/s.

Donations of soap, shampoo, clothing, etc

Volunteers: to sort clothing, health professionals, hairdressers and barbers to assist in grooming

Laundry services for existing clothing, and robes for people to wear while their clothes are being laundered

Volunteers who can teach skills on a regular basis

Charter Of Positive Values

The MRM Charter of Positive Values constitutes a framework of ethical and moral reference for all South Africans. The specific objectives of the Charter include:

  • Generating a moral vision for South Africa by defining what constitutes morality and rightful conduct, thus laying the foundation for commitment.
