Project: STEENBOK WAY PARK

Revamp has begun the transformation of an open space into a magical place for kids and families to socialize, play, and build their own legacy for Fish Hoek Valley!

Scroll through the Gallery of photographs from that first Greening Initiative:

On Saturday, May 27, a merry band of locals launched our first effort to green the park. Most gathered at 10am, with other residents coming in throughout the day to do their part. A total of 16 trees and shrubs were planted, and while 2 were later stolen by unscrupulous strangers, the overall effect was noticed by passers-by and others. After everyone had left, I saw a woman come by from a nearby home and water the new plants, without saying a word to anyone. It was a perfect example of 'community' - don't wait to be asked, just stand up and do your part.

And then - we did it again!

On June 24, we held another Plant-A-Tree Day, and we went from 14 to 23 plants, turning what was once an unfortunate, barren place into a something actually resembling a park!!

The moment when an idea
becomes a reality.

When action becomes a legacy.

On July 3, Amy Townsend from God's Little Lighthouse, brought Ron, staff, and their 1st and 2nd Graders to Steenbok Way Park to plant 2 Olive trees and some beautiful Cape Forget-Me-Not shrubs and started their own legacy.

The kids started their day by picking up the trash from the space, and then broke into teams to assist in the digging and planting before launching themselves at the playground equipment with delightful laughs.

September 9, 2017

In September, we met again to continue planting. Sadly, the lovely little flower corner Jenni and Robyn created, complete with a small metal sculpture, didn't last and the next time they were at the park, an aloe plant was put in that space.

In July 2017, Revampers Anthony Gwilt and Clement came to the park and planted a beautiful Olive tree.

TRANSFORMATION!!

BEFORE

after

Those stairs have always been a bit of an eyesore; the railings peeled and ugly.

So - Revamp invited the young artists who did such a lovely job at the Fish Hoek Museum, Robyn Erasmus and Codey Rodgers, to transform the stairs into a fun, colourful, and beautiful feature of the park.

THE PATH

- Trash can: City cans are easily stolen. If you are a handyman and can create a wooden collection point that is too heavy to move, please get in touch for potential design ideas.

The City does not approve of tagging, so we told them we would take care of it.

before

after

It was not easy.
If anything, it was expensive, challenging, and definitely a labour of love!

Kelvin and Moses launched their considerable energy at that broken bench and, with a little help from The Pole Yard, Noordhoek and Mica Valyland's discounts, got it done!

So, what's next?

1. Transform the unused paved areas into game areas.

2. Keep the plants watered until well-established.

3. Encourage local residents to keep the park clean and free of broken glass, dog poop, cigarette butts, and trash.

Start a work party with family and friends for a monthly clean-up, games, and picnic! Please USE the park!

4. Report any tagging - tell Revamp and if we can turn it into a positive contribution to the space, we will do so. If not, the City has ultimate responsibility to clean it up.

5. The bench at the 2nd Crescent end needs sanding and painting - can you help?

need games?

We have three table tops of games that can be positioned on the Steenbok Way Minion. Borrow them for the day by emailing Leigh at info@skambha-village.org

Bring your own dice

Tell Me About - a great "getting to know you" game. Throw a coloured stone (or dice) to land on a square and tell your play partner a little about yourself. Great for all ages.
