What does Fish Hoek need?

Community Upliftment Project : Fish Hoek

This document is to establish what changes could happen in Fish Hoek in order to uplift this area and to establish a healthier, friendlier community and to provide greater tourist attraction:

o Maintenance to buildings and Pavements. o Attention to Open Spaces for child development, social communication, activity and harmony in the community. o Walls and floor murals for artistic expression. o Introducing more urban greenery o Removal of Palisade fencing, Train tracks from Fish Hoek to Simon’s Town and introduction of a Promenade and MyCiti to False Bay Region. o Creating a Green Park to protect natural ecosystem and promoting health and activity within the community. o Creating open seating on main road. o Displaying history of Fish Hoek for education and tourism

What does Fish Hoek need?

Building and store fronts need to have a fresh coat of paint and some Maintenance. Need islands in the road with palm trees.

The long wall at the back needs a coat of paint. Maybe in future one can have murals painted along this stretch.

De Waal Road needs a Traffic Circle and speed bump coming down the hill as well.

Trees planted on pavements and in car park.

Pavements to be bricked and trees to be planted.

Majority of building are painted beige white and pale yellow. These colours do not do the town justice. The beautiful Art Deco Standard bank building, a beautiful Architectural building, would stand out, if its neighbouring building were painted in stronger, deeper colours as seen below.

Pavements need Maintenance as they are very dangerous to pedestrian especially to the elderly which there are many of in Fish Hoek.

Shoprite Fish Hoek needs a face lift. It would be nicer if the ugly palisade fencing could be removed. It needs more inviting Parking area with trees and a more aesthetic form of paving that isn’t tar eg. Red bricks. The back of the building seems to face the main road. and there is a large space that seems wasted and unfriendly. Maybe some red brick paving, trees and benches could make it look nicer. Reason this request is important. Fish Hoek is a great tourist attraction and this Shoprite does not suit a Beach Town that has so much potential.

Bicycle lane Proposal The Main road parallel parking creates a lot of traffic congestion. I would like to suggest that one should have more designated parking areas and use the parking bay lanes for bicycle lanes and to plant trees every 3m.

Areas that could be turned into parking:

Play Parks / Open spaces need more attention. Example: Open space between 1st Crescent and Second Crescent:

Other Possibilities:

Using open spaces to grow vegetables for those in need and for the community.

close group Open space closed off to public, presumably to stop homeless people from settling in 1st Avenue.

close group close group close row This space has so much potential. Children love to skateboard and cycle in the roads in this area and it is rather dangerous. If one can create a skateboard park for the older children it would keep them off the roads and less likely to be hit by cars. The road in front of this open space is a one way. Imagine a Skate park here for older kids with trees etc. and maybe a basketball court.

Removal of fencing that ruins the beach view:

Proposed Promenade: Stop train tracks at Fish Hoek Station and extend a PROMENADE from Fish Hoek Train Station to Simon’s Town for cycling , running and walking. Introduce MyCiti bus transit around False Bay region.

Introduce Murals into the Main road Paving, Alleys and walls.

Example of walls and pavements that could use some art:

THE BEACH: People walk along this stretch to gain access to the beach past the palisade fencing. Besides being confronted by the rusted ugly palisade fencing which obstructs the view one goes past all the horrible smells and dripping air‐ conditioning systems of this building. If the palisade fencing gets removed maybe this building could be altered so that shops can face the beach as well as maybe have a balcony along the top strip for outside seating looking straight onto the bay. With a promenade running along this stretch this road could be a lot less grubby and cleaner plus friendlier seeing that it runs along the beach side.
